In 2016 The Simmertones' live shows reach new heights, with prestigious slots at the London International Ska Festival and Madness' House of Fun Weekender. It also saw the release of the poignant & topical single ‘Run For Your Life’, which has picked up regular international airplay and showcases the evolving strength and depth of the bands song writing. The Simmertones’ previous biggest hit to date was a cool cover version of the well-known classic 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' (which contains samples of 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' by Doris Day under licence from Sony Music Entertainment).  This was hugely successful for the band, with repeated airplay on BBC radio stations. In particular, Steve Lamacq added the song to his playlist and gave it several airings, including prime time airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. Further airplay was attained in the United States and internationally.

The Grahams

The Grahams

Thursday 01st March

Doug and Alyssa Graham, long time musical partners as well and husband and wife, burst on the scene with their debut album Riverman’s Daughter, a musical portrait of a year long trip down the Mississippi. Absorbing the regions traditions and influences, they managed to produce a record that captured the essence of American roots music and was a resounding commercial and critical success. They’ve followed this up with its counterpart, Glory Bound, a collection of propulsive and dynamic compositions influenced by the speed and energy of recent cross-country train travels, celebrating the part that railways have played in the creation of American music. Beautifully crafted songs with incredibly powerful tales and described by Country Music People as “articulate, poetic and deeply moving” this is Americana at its very finest.

Secret Sisters

Secret Sisters

Tuesday 27th March

The Secret Sisters, Laura and Lydia Rogers,  are the first to admit that their career has had its ups and downs, ranging from complete obscurity to touring with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, from the universal adulation that their self titled debut album created to being dropped by their record company, law suits with their former manager and filing for bankruptcy. However, nothing can keep their irrepressible spirits down for long, and the darker days are definitely over with the release of their new album, You Don’t Own Me Anymore,  produced by Brandi Carlile. A tour de force, it confirms the widely held view that they are the best sibling act since the Everly Brothers. Haunting and gorgeous in equal measures, with harmonies from heaven, it finally proves that the Secret Sisters are here to stay.

Ian Siegal

Ian Siegal

Monday 16th April

In more than a quarter century of touring Ian Siegal’s mission statement has barely changed: songs that are real, shows that resonate, vocals served raw. Today he is considered by many to be the most compelling British blues artiste since the great names of the sixties.   In 2018 he will be touring a new album, his first studio recording of new songs in six years. Produced by American Jimbo Mathus, it is classic Siegal. Every song written or co-written by Siegal and full of the dark and light, clever word play and rough-hewn voicebox he is known for. It also marks the first studio recording with the band he hooked up with in 2013. Frequent touring has evolved a distinctive sound featuring Dusty Ciggaar’s tex-mex infused guitar licks.   Classic Rock tags Siegal “a national treasure,” America’s blues bible says “vast talent” and MOJO magazine ranks him “the cleverest writer and most magnetic blues performer in the UK.” He has taken his music to more than 45 countries and presided over a trophy haul that includes 11 British Blues Awards, three European Blues Awards, two Mojo Blues Albums Of The Year not to mention three US Blues Music Awards nominations - an unprecedented nod for a non-American.   And yet, for all the dizzying achievements in the rear-view mirror, the most important part of any Siegal chronology is always the next show, the next song and the next great record.

An Evening With Mary Gauthier

An Evening With Mary Gauthier

Tuesday 08th May

From a troubled adolescence that continues to inform her often confessional material, through a series of outstanding releases with songs covering topics such as abandonment, alcoholism, homelessness and capital punishment, An Evening With Mary Gauthier sounds like no fun at all. The truth couldn't be more different. She is one of the most highly accomplished and respected singer songwriters in the world, and although her subject material may be dark and provocative, her essential warmth, humour and humanity constantly shines through and her live performances are absolutely captivating. Her latest record, Rifles and Rosary Beads, is her most important yet. Co-written with U.S. veterans and their families, the eleven deeply personal songs on this album reveal the untold stories, and powerful struggles that these veterans and their spouses deal with abroad and after returning home. More than a collection of thoughtful songs, this is a testament to the fact that music can literally save lives. “Her razor-sharp eye for detail and her commitment to unsentimental self-reflection puts her in a class with greats such as Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and yes, Bob Dylan.” – Los Angeles Times. The Deep Dark Woods

The Deep Dark Woods

Tuesday 15th May

The Deep Dark Woods need little introduction to fans of American Music. With material like The Place I Left Behind and The Banks of the Leopold Canal their impeccable musicianship and hauntingly lyrical songs have earned comparisons with The Band, with whom they share a Canadian background and a love of all traditional American music.   Their new record, Yarrow, takes Southern Gothic to a new level, a celebration of the dark and weird – surreal murder ballads and spooky love songs seen through the eyes of frontman Ryan Boldt’s fevered and sometimes macabre imagination.

Elles Bailey

Elles Bailey

Thursday 31st May

Elles Bailey has a talent for crafting and seamlessly weaving rootsy blues, country, and soulful rock, with a contemporary edge. What’s more fate has blessed her with a ‘smoky vocal’ style that perfectly fits her music, after a stint in hospital as a child changed her voice forever. Her debut album Wildfire (Sept 1st 2017) which debuted at no.2 in the iTunes blues Charts was tracked in Blackbird studios Tennessee. Produced by Brad Nowell ‘Wildfire’ assembled a host of Nashville’s finest, including Grammy Award winning guitarist Brent Mason and three-time ‘Musician Hall Of Famer’ Bobby Wood. Blended together back in the UK with the likes of Jonny Henderson (Robyn Ford, Matt Schofield) on Hammond organ and Joe Wilkins on blistering guitar, the result is a unique trans-Atlantic coming together of styles. Reviewers have been wowed by Elles and her debut album with Maverick Magazine gave ‘Wildfire’ top marks (5/5) calling every song ‘Fresh & Original’ And Blues In Britain reminding us that ‘It’s a fact that very few make it to the big stage but Elles Bailey has the necessary talent, the drive, and now the product.’

For The Record Charity Night

Friday 21st September

For the Record are a professional events band with a difference!  Their two female lead singers are bang on-trend with a sublime blend of harmonies, performing all the best well-known tunes to keep the dance floor going all night long.   Established in 2015 from a group of good mates, each member is a first class musician, and their mantra of ‘always live’ means there are no pre-recorded sections.  The rhythm section consists of keys, drums, guitar and bass, with each member on the top of their game and their well-rehearsed approach ensures a tight and dynamic performance.   Keep an eye out for their signature medleys (seamless string of tracks inventively stitched together). -------- Two Way Stretch are a five piece who have only recently started to play gigs on a more regular basis.  Roger (guitar), Paul (bass) and I have been getting together regularly for at least ten years with two other friends and playing at the occasional party.  One of those friends moved to Exmouth and the other dropped out about a year ago so we began looking around for replacements.  Den (guitar) came into the shop and during conversation mentioned that his previous band was no more which led me to suggest that he come to a rehearsal - he brought Geoff (keyboards) along too and since then we have become a bit more ambitious about looking for opportunities to play live. -------- The Upside Down Kinks are the ultimate tribute to The Kinks. Their seasoned proffessional musicianship keeps the stories behing the music of the legendary band alive! Tickets £10 adv
