Alejandro Escovedo

Alejandro Escovedo

Sunday 02nd April

If anyone deserves to be regarded as the father of modern Americana, it has to be Alejandro Escovedo. His trailblazing career began as a member of San Francisco’s famed punk innovators The Nuns, who supported the Sex Pistols at their last ever show, and continued with Austin-based alt-country rock pioneers, Rank & File and True Believers. Countless all-star collaborations and tribute album appearances and a series of beloved solo albums beginning with 1992’s acclaimed Gravity have earned him a surplus of distinctions: No Depression magazine’s Artist of the Decade Award in 1998 and the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Performing in 2006 among many others.

John Fairhurst

John Fairhurst

Thursday 13th April

An explosion of textures, influences and intoxicating musicianship. The stand-out guitarist to have emerged from the British blues/folk/ acoustic scene, a captivating storyteller, breaking out into new territory with a distinctive, gritty, vocal style and a melting-pot of musical influences.   Following rapturous receptions with main stage shows at numerous UK festivals, including Glastonbury, John is back in the studio, laying down tracks for the long-awaited follow-up to the critically acclaimed acoustic album, Joys of Spring (2008). “Truly exquisite.” (The Guardian) A masterful musician and songwriter, John is recognised as one of the most creative guitarists on the circuit. Drawing inspiration from fingerpicking maestros John Fahey, Bert Jansch and Leo Kottke, blues guitarists Robert Johnson, Bukka White and Mississippi Fred McDowell, African guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Moroccan Gnaoua music, Indian sarod and sitar masters K Sridhar and Ravi Shankar and more recently Christopher Paul Stelling and John Butler, John references a diverse collection of world genres, blending eastern melodies with jaw-dropping guitar dexterity. His solo sets truly are a lesson in the art of fingerpicking blues and acoustic folk. “Fairhurst is both a masterful musician and songwriter, who carefully intertwines music of varying ethnicities into one roaring whole...with a freshness that is breathtaking... Makes Seasick Steve’s three stringed blues sound like the two-dimensional ramblings of a penniless hobo.” (Chris Gilliver - citylifers.co.uk) “John Fairhurst is possibly the finest guitarist you will ever see...brilliant songwriting and a gravel-swilled belter of a voice.” (BBC Manchester)

LAURENCE JONES

LAURENCE JONES

Tuesday 25th April

British blues artist Laurence Jones is often labelled “the future of the blues,” but this has to be factually incorrect, doesn’t it? He’s HERE and NOW - socking it to audiences around the world. Blowin’ the roof off every time. Several major awards. Selling serious numbers of his four solo albums. His fourth “Take Me High” just released - produced by legendary producer Mike Vernon. Does that sound like someone working at being “something” and “somebody” in the future? He’s not practicing. It’s not a rehearsal. He’s DEADLY serious and damn good at what he does. Hailed as “one to watch” as a teenager by the blues media, concert/festival bookers, blues fans and various guitar stars alike, young Laurence really has come of age. The blues cub has become a man with a plan. Turning heads and making jaws drop with his take-no-prisoners, incendiary live set and his stunning records. Laurence and his crack band - Laurence Jones on vocals and guitars, Roger Inniss on bass and Phil Wilson on drums/backing vocals - put the power into “power trio” - with their modern day blues rock with an edge. He sings, he plays and he writes – a triple threat – and he does so like a veteran of three times his age. You can tell this is far more than a job by the Cheshire cat grin glued to his face during every gig. LJ LIVES to play that guitar. He LOVES to play that guitar. He just HAS to play that guitar………

Dan Patlansky

Dan Patlansky

Friday 05th May

The word “legend” is loaded with meaning – especially when one thinks of Blues-legends. It conjures up images of seasoned older players that have been touched with a rare gift, and whose talent has been salted through the onslaught of years in the music business.   To achieve legend-status as a Blues-musician at the age of 30 is almost unheard of. Enter Dan Patlansky – an artist who shares the muse that touched Hendrix, Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Vaughan. What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocaster at the age of 30, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime.   Dan Patlansky is a conglomerate of charisma, charm and musical genius - and all of this comes wrapped up in an unassuming, startlingly attractive package that bespeaks his Judeo-Spanish heritage. And yet, he doesn’t seem to realise the extent of his tactile appeal – both on stage and in person. Humility suits him well and is as much an extension of his being as his Fender. There are no airs and graces here – just sincerity and an incredible musical talent.

Devon Allman

Devon Allman

Tuesday 09th May

No one can bring the house down quite like Devon Allman. With his soaring guitar licks, unique vocals that straddle the border between blues, rock and country, songs that touch upon the pulse of zen positivity and real deal life and love situations, Allman can rock hard, rouse up a crowd and become your best friend all within the span of a two hour concert. There are not many musicians out there that can do all this and not get lost in their own ego but Allman does it effortlessly. Allman is a believer in the power of real music. With only guitars, via himself and Bobby Schneck Jr, some bass and drums courtesy of Steve Duerst and Anthony Nanney, the music he brought to the Lava Cantina stage in Baton Rouge last week was passionate and full of crowd-connecting hymns. With a set filled up mostly by his own tunes, it proves that not all non-superstar bands have to fall upon covers to meat up their concerts to please the crowd in front of them. What this young man had to offer was good enough to have them cheering, dancing, singing and calling for more. “You have to always bring it,” Allman told me during his first interview in Glide in 2010. “Even if ten people came, they paid their money, they came to get lost from their world for a couple of hours and you always give it. Always. It’s always about the people.”   With support from the excellent 'Curse of Lomo'

Garry Tallent from The E Street Band w/Kevin Montgomery

Saturday 10th June

The longtime bassist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band will be the boss this May when Garry Tallent embarks on his first solo run. He, along with Nashville singer-songwriter Kevin Montgomery will be stopping by The Tunnels in Bristol with his 7 piece band featuring Americana favorites, Fats Kaplan and Kristi Rose. Often introduced during Springsteen’s mammoth E Street Band shows as the “Tennessee Terror,” Tallent was born in Detroit and grew up in New Jersey. The “Tennessee Terror” moniker supposedly came about following a drive through the Volunteer State. Tallent has an album to go along with his tour. The rockabilly-packed Break Time is available on vinyl and CD as well as via digital downloads. Break Time just might be an apt description of Tallent’s 2017 situation. A founding member of E Street, Tallent will be part of Springsteen’s Australia / New Zealand tour beginning next week and running through February. He will begin his tour of the UK/Ireland on May 25th. Montgomery’s mom sang with Elvis and Dad wrote songs like “Heartbeat” for Buddy Holly, and was his first musical partner. Montgomery has written songs for Martina McBride and sung on Lee Ann Womack records, and is a hardcore troubadour with four 50 States in 50 Days tours under his belt. Said The Maiden are Jess Distill, Hannah Elizabeth and Kathy Pilkinton, three friends who discovered a mutual love of folk music when they reunited several years after spending their school years together in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.  From tentatively performing a few songs at their local Redbourn Folk club in 2012 and later being asked to appear at one of the club's guest nights, the group soon secured support and headline slots at folk clubs and festivals around the country which in turn have led to opportunities to support many fantastic artists including The Fisherman's Friends, Jim Moray, Megson, Martin Carthy, Sam Carter, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney and Clannad.  They were also honoured to join legendary fiddler Dave Swarbrick on a successful UK solo tour in the spring of 2014, and released their debut album 'A Curious Tale' in June of the same year.

Flash - A Tribute to Queen

Friday 08th December

FLASH – A Tribute to QUEEN; has been created and is performed with love and admiration for the late great Freddie Mercury and the musical legacy of Queen. A desire in each member to replicate what made queen so special and to bring back some of the live magic that made Queen the international super-group it is today.   Soon to enter their 45th year, Queen have amassed a huge back catalogue of hit records, there’s just so many to chose from and it’s hard work constructing a show that captures Queen’s creative history in such a short amount of stage time but we guarantee the show to be a none stop jukebox of the very best of Queen, hit after hit, anthem after anthem, with audience participation at a high from the very start.   All Flash band members have been creatively and technically inspired by Queen, each taking satisfaction and pride in producing this ultimate tribute to Queen each playing replica equipment adding that little extra sound characteristic and all performed in authentic costumes making it a show to remember.
