IAN SIEGAL and JIMBO MATHUS £15adv

IAN SIEGAL and JIMBO MATHUS £15adv

Wednesday 25th May

If your musical preference is a combination of roots blues and folk Americana delivered with irreverent humour and nuggets of folklore, then look no further. This transatlantic duo of multi-award winners ticks all the boxes, combining as it does the talents of the UK’s leading contemporary Bluesman, Ian Siegal, with the Grammy-nominated songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Mississippi, Jimbo Mathus. Siegal first met Mathus in 2013 when the latter dropped by the Zebra Ranch studio in Coldwater Mississippi to contribute some banjo and mandolin parts to a Siegal recording. The two discovered a shared passion for many of the same musical influences. Now, when someone has found fame with a band called Squirrel Nut Zippers (as Mathus did when he formed this alt-Americana outfit), you know you’re in for something different! An almost overnight sensation, The Zippers played at the Second inauguration of President Bill Clinton and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Their albums achieved gold and platinum sales. Then, at their peak and in classic music industry style amid disastrous lawsuits, the Squirrel Nut Zippers were no more. Mathus went on to pursue a variety of musical projects. Among these, he toured and recorded with Buddy Guy (catalyzing the distinct approach of Guy’s “Sweet tea” album) and is a founding member of the South Memphis String Band. For devotees of blues and Americana on this side of the Atlantic, Ian Siegal needs no introduction. He’s the eight-times British Blues Awards winner, European Blues Awards winner, and two-times US Blues Music Awards nominee. He’s sung with the prestigious ONJ orchestra in Paris, played in more than 40 countries, and among his latest albums is a BBC recording made at London’s Royal Albert Hall. His accolades include two from MOJO magazine for Best Blues Album of the Year - the only non-American to achieve this distinction. Ahead of the tour the duo are releasing a 21-track album recorded during their debut tour in 2014. Prepare to be entertained!

Friday 27th May

DJ Dance Night. Dance the night away to the energy, sound and innocence of sweet 60’s soul music! As soul music turned into funk in the late-Sixties, disillusioned kids from the North of England fed up with the ‘pop’ scene began to turn their tastes backward, scouring the racks for rare Motown and Detroit soul they hadn't heard yet. Dave Godin, who ran the Soul City record shop in London, developed the term ‘Northern Soul’ in 1968 to refer to obscure soul being bought by fans from the North of the country. Manchester's Twisted Wheel club was the first to cater to this phenomenon, starting in 1963; by 1967, the Saturday "all-nighters" of up tempo rare soul had gained in popularity. So join us at the Tunnels with music provided by our resident DJ playing 45's from many labels like Staxs,  Atlantic, and or course Tamla Motown.KEEP THE FAITH!

Thursday 16th June

The Deslones are a five piece band based in New Orleans who take the musical heritage of their adopted city and mix it with a helping of blues, country, soul and gospel to make their own mutated version of American music that pays tribute to many yet remains fresh, vibrant and utterly unique. All five members share singing and songwriter duties and their obvious love and respect for musical predecessors such as Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones and Hank Williams creates a massively infectious sound that breathes new life into old values. Very highly recommended. “Whether it’s the languid pedal steel colouration of Low Down Soul’s shuffle, the country gospel of Those Were (Could’ve Been) the Days or the Morricone cowboy canter of Time to Believe In, the Deslondes are deft delvers into the pure stuff of musicianship” – The Australian

Sunday 09th October

With eight albums in twenty six years, Freakwater couldn’t be described as prolific, but their tendency to only say something when its worth saying is what has made them one of the most highly regarded contemporary American bands. Their first release in a decade, Scheherazade, has earned universal critical praise. Highlighting the sisterly harmonies of Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge Bean and songs that reflect a sepia tinted alternative and sinister vision of America, Freakwater fully deserve their legendary reputation. With UK tours are as rare as their records, this is more of an event than a show. “Longtime fans who have patiently waited for this resurgence will be thrilled with results.” American Songwriter, “Haunting songs rooted in old-time country, Southern Gothic and humming electric ambience.” Uncut.

Having helped to transform bluegrass music in outfits such Nickel Creek and The Watkins Family, and more recently as a third of I’m with Her, alongside Sara Jarosz and Aiofe O’Donovan, Sara Watkins has rightfully earned a reputation as a musician and songwriter par excellence. Her new release, Young In All The Wrong Ways, is a revealing and powerful example of soul-baring songwriting at its best. Ranging from the quiet and thoughtful to flat out rockers, the record is a brave, adventurous leap forward for one of the best roots musicians in America - in her own words "music that pays tribute to the present as well as the past".

“Chantel McGregor deserves to be held up as a messiah of blues-rock and given her own mountain. She doesn't strum or pick her guitar but almost bends and distorts it, as if she's channelling the ghost of Hendrix through her fingers"  Imagine the tone of Robin Trower, the inspiration of Hendrix, the influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the energy of Bonamassa, the intensity of Walter Trout and the haunting vocal of Stevie Nicks all rolled into one........ then let me introduce Chantel McGregor, one of the most exciting rock and blues musicians that the UK has ever produced! At the age of eight Chantel became the youngest person in the country to pass a Rock school exam and at 12, she was jamming in her native Bradford and evolving into an incredible musician. Mojohand are a sophsticated young duo exploring the vast terrain of acoustic blues, soul, rock'n'roll and Americana.
